[Kundalini Yoga] White turban

I am curious how many of you wear a white turban when doing morning sadhna. Did it actually make a difference? Can you say how? I am also curious if any white head covering will do (I am thinking of a simple white cap).
I am approaching this yoga from more of a scientific perspective, and I have to say the white turban seems to my intellect like psychological window dressing. But I am willing to put aside my biases and try.

Happy 2012

[Kundalini Yoga] Teacher Training (maybe) Near you

Sat Nam,

There will be a level 1 teacher training session starting in September 2012
in NW Arkansas. Hopefully that will be more accessible to some of you.
I'll post the details when I have them.

Another thing you might do is approach your teacher (or contact a Kundalini
Yoga teacher nearby, which can be one days drive distance) and ask them if
you get together enough people they would be willing to teach a Level I
training class - or, if not that, offer weekend workshops.

When I started back to my Kundalini Yoga I was teaching Hatha and had a
number of regular students, so I thought I'd offer my first workshop. I
contacted YogaYoga in Austin, TX to see if one of their teachers would be
interested in coming here (6-8 hr drive one way) to teach a workshop. And
they offered the head teachers/owners Mehtab & Guru Karam. I was thrilled.
They even brought a gong with them. We had about 21 people (not huge, but
for NW AR it was!) and from that one workshop new teacher was "born" (one of
my students fell in love with KY and the gong that he went on to become a
Level I teacher, traveling to Austin every-other weekend to learn) and
others did Kundalini Yoga for the first time and still practice.

Often spaces are available for a low fee to use for workshops if you don't
have a big space. You can do it.

Sat Nam,

Arjinder

Hello,
I must say I agree with you that the classes are very expensive, too long,
and require travel.
OTOH, I would not want to be taught by someone who just hangs up a shingle
and says, "I am a yoga teacher." A person can be badly hurt by an inept yoga
teacher.

I wish there would be something like an apprenticeship. It seems to me that
some of the things that are taught in the certified training are not
necessary like all the anatomy and physiology. But that's just my opinion. I
have not taken the training. I did live in an ashram for a while and after a
couple of years of practicing yoga, I was invited to lead a class which I
did. Since then I often lead a class, but I am careful to say that I am NOT
a teacher, that I am a practitioner, who is merely doing yoga with other
people.

Sat Nam, I have to say that Anatomy and Physiology are two of the most intregal parts of any yoga teacher training. Not only do they benefit you the practicioner but they allow you to give verbal cues from deep within. Posture yoga is all about the daily practice and the deeping of the pose. By using your inner eye you watch as each muscle tendon and ligament softens, melts and moves breath by breath into the deepest state of the posture and meditation of the asanas. Without knowing the anatomy one can not relate to their body or the physical bodies of others. If you can not give verbal cues from what you are feeling and know what muscles are involved then you can not truely teach a class. Sat Nam Raj Kirin Kaur

[Kundalini Yoga] So Purkh

Sat Nam,

Kat's letter and boyfriend's comment reminds me of the meditation given
by Yogi Bhajan for women 'to do for their men.' It basically changes
the energy is many interesting ways. There are many stories about the
effects.

The meditation consists of repeating 11 times the stanza in Rehras
(evening prayer) So Purkh. Takes about 31 minutes.

If anyone is doing this meditation and wants to share the results,
please do so.

Also I am putting out a request for someone who knows how to pronounce
this mantra to make a recording repeating the 'words' slowly so that
those who wish to learn it can do so. I would suggest (1) a very slow
version, which takes 31 minutes about and (2) a second version which
would be faster and include 11 times in the approximately 31 minutes.
Anyone interested?

I know there are some versions available but they are too fast for
beginners. If you have a link for any version that works for you, please
send it.

Blessings for the new year!

Guru Rattana :+)

no offense, but I don't think that is the reason. I think the reason people charge the prices they charge, is because they can.

Like The Solstice -every year it goes up, it was about $500. for the 6 days, now I have no idea, perhaps it is $1000. True there are a few scholarships, but not everyone gets one, and working in the kitchen for a reduced fee, but not everyone can do that.

I always got that stuff about "the universe will provide". Well Actually the universe doesn't always provide. That is why we have billions of poor people in this world.

I am not able to do the expensive events, so I just accept it.

That is just how it is.

I don't resent it, it is my life, and if I had made different choices when I was younger, I would have more oppoortunities now.

But I disagree with the idea that if your heart is pure, and your intention is clear, the money will come.

Hello,

Wishing you luck indeed.
It's funny how if it seems funny it must be religion!
Some people when I tell them it improved my health say things like 'Yes faith can be an amazing thing'.

Anyway the more 'faith' I do the better I feel.

I wonder if there there is  another faith where I can get the benefits without all the hard work?

Keep it up..

I just took a look at this class below - some are free, and I am going to try it before signing up.

very weird that on the website she has headline of David Ickes, who is - a real nut. He is one of those who believe that 13 genetically-related families rule the world, and that there are half-human, half-reptile beings live under the Denver International Airport waiting to take over the world.
whew! :)

You can look at his website and see that I am correct.
Don't know if I want to take yoga with someone who believes this!
Maybe I'll pass.

This is interesting.

I had always been told, if this movement or set makes you angry, then you need it, so I would keep doing it.

But I can see your point, that not all sets are for every human being.
Important to say I think.

[Kundalini Yoga] Re: Teaching Kundalini Yoga

Hello,
I must say I agree with you that the classes are very expensive, too long, and require travel.
OTOH, I would not want to be taught by someone who just hangs up a shingle and says, "I am a yoga teacher." A person can be badly hurt by an inept yoga teacher.

I wish there would be something like an apprenticeship. It seems to me that some of the things that are taught in the certified training are not necessary like all the anatomy and physiology. But that's just my opinion. I have not taken the training. I did live in an ashram for a while and after a couple of years of practicing yoga, I was invited to lead a class which I did. Since then I often lead a class, but I am careful to say that I am NOT a teacher, that I am a practitioner, who is merely doing yoga with other people.

[Kundalini Yoga] Re: I got hurt by a non-Kundalini yoga teacher

Hi, thank you.
Yes I suspected from the beginning that the anger I held toward her was holding me back. I told someone "I know I should forgive her, but really I wish a big bird would pick her up and drop her in the ocean". lol
Forgiveness - in my experience - is not something that one can will. I'm not sure how one gains it. But finally I was telling someone about the injury, and this person is also a yoga teacher, and very spiritual person.
She gave me the same shtick about forgiveness and I gave her the same answer about Big Bird.
Then she said, maybe the person you are not forgiving is yourself, Maybe you are blaming yourself for taking the class, or for not keeping her at a safe distance.
That hit home for me. I have been slowly improving every day.
I guess whatever works.
I thank you for your response and for your suggestion of EFT.
Perhaps my suggestion or yours may help another human being, as we struggle with these experiences of being in these human bodies. :)

But from the tone of your posting, I will make a guess that one thing that will help is an attitude of forgiveness. I hope this doesn't sound harsh or judgmental, but if you are holding on to anger it may make the injury last longer. I'm sure there are kriyas that can help with forgiveness. One thing that works is EFT. You can learn on you tube if you search "eft forgiveness". Or whatever works for you.

RE: [Kundalini Yoga] Hello!

Sat Nam. Good luck, Kat. My husband wasn't interested in Kundalini Yoga (he practices Tai Chi) until I asked if he'd go to the White Tantra with me (almost 2 years ago) – and ½ thru he said "You know, I think I'll take the teacher training with you." My mouth dropped open … as did that of my friends who were there also. What he felt during the WT was, to him, amazing … more than he'd ever felt during his 30+ years of practicing Tai Chi. He is now a certified k-yoga teacher, and practices regularly. When you practice you affect everything and everyone around you – I saw it happen many times with spouses of others during our teacher training. So just be. Your boyfriend will probably change his opinions.

Sat Nam,

I'm just dropping in to let you know that I have joined. I'm one of the

many yoga teachers living in Portland, OR. Just decided to pump up my

spiritual fortitude with more sadhana and japa in general. Today I woke up

far later than 3.5 hrs before sunrise (8), took a cold shower, put on all

white including head cover and did an hour of kriya. My basic goal is to do

both ego destroyer and kriya of liberation for at least 40 days. I live

with my non-yogi boyfriend and he made sure to make a snarky comment about

going all crazy with "a new religion"..... Wish me luck?

Sat Nam Kat!

We all choose our paths, most of the time the wrong way. We all choose our company, mostly the wrong way.  We all choose what we think is our destiny, which has already been traced, and spend a lifetime seeking for the one fish in the ocean.  But we are afraid to move through our fate.  Our Soul moves in only one direction.  No choosing!  Be sure you are not moving in the direction of your mind just to prove something, or to prove somebody something.  But if you enter this path with your heart leading the way, just like the caterpillar enters the chrysalis to brake through the pupa to become a beautiful butterfly, there are things you must embrace, or shed.

And since you mentioned it, companionship is not a relation but a relating. The relating has one purpose, for each one to help each other rise up into divinity and experience it, fully aware, while we are alive.  There should be no other purpose.

I wish to the best in your enhanced Sadhana.

Blessings!
Adi Singh

[Kundalini Yoga] Re: Teaching Kundalini Yoga

Thank you for this above advise. I have had the same question, not being able to do the teacher's training and certification because of lack of funds and time. I learnt kundalini yoga when I first came to US from India 20 years ago. I learnt it from a friend of mine, have taught it to some individual friends of mine and practiced it via a few yoga classes once in a while and some from yoga tapes and books. I have been practicing vipassana mediation as well for the past many years and I am coming back to Kundalini and for some reason I want to get back into it and do more and I feel I am ready for more.

[Kundalini Yoga] Re: Prosperity Mantras

The prosperity mantras that I know of have to be chanted out loud....I am currently in a situation in which I am not able to chant loudly....chanting loudly is for the physical...does anyone know of a prosperity mantra that I can do silently or softly?

Thank you.

RE: [Kundalini Yoga] Re: Teaching Kundalini Yoga

Sat Nam. Yep, my teachers said "teach" after I took my first classes with
them. I had been practicing Kundalini Yoga for quite a while, but had
hesitated to teach. Then I started teaching - Yogi Bhajan gave us many many
Kriyas, and we teach what he taught. Practice one, teach one, Practice two,
teach two .. etc. Best way to learn is to teach.

Sat Nam,

Arjinder

Sat Nam!

If you really want to be a teacher, you can do what all Yoga Bhajan's
students from 1969-mid 90's did. Teach! We had no official training.
Yogi Bhajan just told us to teach and so we did. We figured things out
by teaching and following a few basic guidelines. The teacher training
programs were developed in the mid 90s and beyond.

There is a lot more material available now that you can use to teach
yourself. My new book "The Inner Art of Love -- Awakening Your Heart
with Kundalini Yoga" contains the basic foundation for all my teacher
training courses. You can buy it for $29 and study it at home. There is
enough information in that book to guide your personal and teaching
practice for years. And then there are dozens of books with kriyas and
meditations, not to mention all the material available on line.
www.yogatech.com

You can also take over 75 classes from me on Guru Rattana On-line
streaming video classes. I explain what you need to know for your
personal practice and for teaching. I know many teachers are using
these classes to teach their own courses. It costs $7 a month. From
the feedback I have received from all over the world (including
Siberia), the energy comes through very clearly.

In sum, you can teach yourself with all the materials available. The
most important thing for becoming a teacher is to TEACH!

Yes, teacher training on-line is also a good idea. And with a a lot of
resources this could happen. Although the Yoga Alliance Certification
requires 200 hours with a teacher.

Teach and set your intentions. Everything is possible.

Blessings,

Guru Rattana :+)

Sat Nam!

So you want to be a KY teacher? From my perspective as a teacher trainer
and long time student of Yogi Bhajan, the most fundamental requirement
is to be able to hold a neutral space of love in your mind, body and
heart. This is what it means to be a teacher, not a man, not a woman,
not a person. The deeper the more authentic your personal space of
love, the more your students will be able to find this space within
themselves. This space you cultivate yourself in your own daily
practice. Yogi Bhajan called this self-initiation.

Holding, containing, sharing and enjoying the space of love is our most
essential task. It is like the nucleus of the cell. Everything else fits
in, falls into place, is healed by, synergizes with, revolves around our
core, which is Love. Go for it. Oh, yes, do let us know how you are doing.

Love,

Guru Rattana :+)

Yes I agree, I know the group energy is important but what they need is online training and accreditation perhaps with a few lessons/classes/examination which are affordable for a fraction of the cost; as it is such an important thing to become qualified as we need more teachers - they should be all over the place at this time!  That's why I started www.kundaliniyogaclasses.com at least the lessons are affordable and accessible even though the group energy is not there

Sat Nam,

When we had our training, our teachers accepted monthly payments, which was
easier on the budget. Talk to the teachers where you want to go - they'll
do their best to help you find a way. And another place had auctions and
bake sales to be able to offer scholarships. Oh, and our Ashram in KC would
sometimes accept Karma Yoga for a payment. And some places have teachers
with a spare room where you can stay, or an Ashram with rooms for love
offerings.

Sat Nam,

Arjinder Kaur

classes are so very expensive - I find that to be very frustrating and feel
that it has more to do with marketing than than Yogi Bhajan's philosophy
that you teach to create teachers that in turn will teach. Now one must be
certified and the certifications are very expensive. The classes always
require travel and added expenses for lodging.
> I am feel certain that I am not the only one that is frustrated by this.
Does anyone know of a way that you can learn to become a teacher without
busting ones bank account?

Thank you!

I stopped doing SCK, and it has helped. In just a few days. I will find another kriya to work with instead.

Thank you,
Jenny
