As an example that one need not be a fanatic -
I started doing the set for adrenal/kidney at 4 am, after a stretching set.
I did it almost every day for over 2 months, the first time I have been so consistent. I felt good and I felt proud of being disciplined. {I always get up early so that part was not hard for me.}

Then I started to feel tired during the day and cranky. And I thot well maybe I must feel worse before I feel better.
But inside somewhere I knew that Kundalini Yoga makes me feel better, not worse.
But I kept on. Even tho I was hungry when I woke up, and it was becoming hard to do the set cuz I was hungry and weak.
DUH!

One morning when I felt really bad it finally dawned on me -
I have issues with my adrenals. For people like me, it is important to EAT when I wake up, not do exercises!
I was causing my adrenals to be even more fatigued by what I was doing.

So I have to find a different way. And I regret that cuz I LOVE doing yoga at 4 am.
But the fact is - at least for now - I cannot do it.
So today I got up and ate some whole oat cereal (good to stablize blood sugar) and after a couple of hours I'll do the set, and see how I feel.

My point is that I feel like an idiot, cuz I was actually making myself sick by being rigid.
After all, Kundalini Yoga teaches us to observe how we feel and respond to that.

Thank you everyone for your practical and 'be kind to yourself' advice about sadhana. I support this approach.

During my European tour, I could feel the relief and vibration change in the room, when I encouraged everyone to do what they like and what makes them feel good (instead of beating themselves up). And do your best to commit to do something every day even if it is for 5-11 minutes.

Another idea is to get a timer the makes it possible to automatically start playing Japji or Aquarian sadana chants before you get up.

Concerning all the techniques that Yogi Bhajan gave us --

NOT everyone is supposed to to everything.

The wide selection of sets, meditations and other techniques means that there is something for everybody. You get to choose what you want to do and what works for you at any point in time.

If everyone does something, we are each making our contribution. Together we are making a greater than we can know contribution. And we are supporting each other and many others.

Respects Sir / Madam,
I today for the first time got clear cut entry into the spiritual world and
discovered the facts related to chakras and were true to the most but i deny a
few though. I wanted to know how to gather info from the chakras. Please give me
any assurance or any ray of trust that i may not disturb the chakras in itself
and create the unknown. i tried before telepathy and bit telekanetic but couldnt
keep track of things happening.It worked a lot for me. i am not interested much
in enjoying the bliss and whatever others call because i came with a reason to
advance deeper and deeper into the inner world. I want to be Doctor for good by
profession and other means. Sorry if i sound arrogant with my words.

i have been doing things related to reiki unknowingly . how do i know its
really true? i try it on my self almost all the time

Thanks everyone for your responses.

The beauty of posting this group is somehow or the other I find heart convincing answers, great people like you respond and if they dont then I stumble on things which come as true core answers every single time. I am awed every time! Wahe Guru!

This time after posting to the group I was deeply contemplating on this, have the habit to open books to a random page (especially spiritual books).  That evening out of nowhere I decided to carry Autobiography of Yogananda and during my Wait-time flipped the book to open to "Law of Miracles" chapter and amazingly enough in that chapter Yogananda beautifully details about World as manifestation of "Light" and how lightly we should see life.. very comforting!

Also, today on youtube I stumbled on "What is my responsibility"  to negativity in the world from Eckhart Tolle and it was like hitting the Nail on the head!

The Tao te Ching (pt1 and 2) on Youtube are marvelous spiritual insights.

Yeah, gong is fabulous. About time that I get around to writing, since we last met at Spirit Fest. I'm the person you never remember when we meet, helping me with modifying Camel, talking about heart openers and me coming to stay at the Ashram in Millis some time..... Ring a bell?? Just in case, I'll attach a picture. 
You were sweet helping me out with my posture and giving me much needed hugs. The relationship thing is still in limbo, up and down and I feel that I need to let go and open my heart wider. You
mentioned a really nice heart opener you know. Can you possibly send it to me? I'm still thinking about coming to the Ashram, but have my niece from Germany staying with me for 3 months. Probably after that.

together from more than one gong meditation. He didn't do long Gong

Meditations. When the yoga is strong it doesn't long to 'get it'. There

are many, many audio and video tapes with him gonging. It's a blessing

to find him playing the gong as he was the master. Often the yoga sets

written in our many manuals mention he played the gong at some point. If

Satnam,

Accept whatever is happening, as His divine will. When we start living under
His Will or order, bliss comes. When we attach ourselves to the word of his
Shabad, happiness comes no matter what!

Yes at many times we met things nothing less than demons, yet we have to
remember that this world is nothing less than a playground where there is
good and the bad to create an aura of balance but in the end though hard,
the battle is won by the purest. Lets make an effort to make ourselves pure
by thoughts with the help of shabad.

If there is any Cruelty being occured somewhere let us take the help of the
Sweet Words of the God to heal it and bless people with goodness.

It is our misdeeds that brings infortunate things which leads to habits and
ultimately character and soul take an habitual shape of demon forgetting God
and creating evil.

It is by meditation and prayers we can bring around good change. Difficult
at start but once habit is created it becomes our routine.

enlightened, educated and informed by your questions and responses, I am yet to
contribute anything.
 
May my first contribution be simply one of gratitude! Through this group I am

myself, that yoga is a personal process and it's not the destination that's

hmm..that's interesting.
Then it seems like something about the practice leads to these feelings- are you referring to the gnawing feeling of hunger?

I also get more hungry when the seasons change, but not to this extent.

I'm a new member. My name is Angela and I live and teach in Sweden. Wanted to respond to Erin's post because I think so many of us have experienced this, especially the part where we come down so hard on ourselves for not doing exactly what we think is supposed to be the correct way of practicing kundaliniyoga. As others have mentioned, you'll probably get more out of a practice that you approach with joy (even if it's later in the day) than trying to force yourself out of bed and feeling like you've failed when you can't do it.

I had a similar experience recently. My father passed away this summer and it involved a lot of physical and emotional hardship for me, partly because I was away from home and had to do a lot of air travel. I managed to keep up with my practice somewhat but when I returned home to Sweden everything just kind of fell apart. I could still wake up early most days but getting up and doing any kind of asanas or meditation felt quite impossible. I made it worse by fretting over how I was going to start classes in a month if I couldn't even do my own practice. At the same time I felt intuitively that I wasn't helping things by beating myself up - it just made me feel even weaker.

I consulted an experienced and very wise KY teacher whom I hold the utmost respect for and he gave me some great advice. He told me to take it easy and start slowly by reading Jaap Sahib (in English) and understand that all that divinity was also a part of me. Then after a while I could start with doing some asanas and the Aquarian Sadhana mantras for meditation. He suggested I not let myself get boxed in by a teacher-training definition of what my Sadhana should be. He put into words what I was actually feeling inside but could not verbalize.

I started reading Jaap Sahib in bed when I woke up in the morning. Eventually I managed to get out of bed and read it. Then I slowly added a yoga set and started doing the 62 minutes of meditation afterwards. But when the kids started school it was hard to fit it all in. So I just did what I could do each day (with devotion) and accepted that things were they way they were at the moment. And little by little I've been able to do more and more. Sometimes I can get up very early and fit everything in, sometimes I end up doing my Sadhana later in the day and now and then I might miss a day ( or do a breathwalk meditation while I'm out and about). At this point I've started to have a little more consistency in my practice and have found a set and meditation that I intend to continue with for at least 40 days. But most importantly I feel like I am being more honest in my practice and letting it work for me.

Discipline is important but so is listening to what you need to be at your best. You can force yourself to sit for an hour to meditate but if your heart isn't it, what good does it do?
Well, that was a long way of saying be kind to yourself and listen inward to what you really need right here, right now!

It is clear that you want to start a daily practice but you are setting
yourself up for failure every day. I too am not good with an early morning
practice so I have chosen another time of the day that is more suitable for
me. I like doing yoga before bed so that I feel that great sense of
accomplishment before I go to sleep. After doing this for 40 days, I found
myself doing some basic stretches when I woke up which eventually turned
into a short energizing kriya in the morning. Now I feel a great sense of
accomplishment at the beginning and at the end of my days - after all, isn't
that what a good yoga practice should do? Find YOUR time and you will find
YOUR bliss.

snooze but when the alarm goes off, i'm so tired and comfortable being
still. cant seem to resist.

any advice is welcome. tough love even. i don't know.

I totally understand. Have compassion and give yourself credit for even WANTING to get up to work on yourself. Let this be a process over time and be patient with yourself. If you use too much force, you will break yourself. Then what's the point?

Why not start by setting your alarm 5-10 minutes earlier than you would normally want to get up. Instead of making yourself get out of bed right away, just lie in bed for those 5-10 minutes and chant mantra. No big deal. Perfection is a myth. The whole point of the practice is to start using the tools in a way that enhance your life. Relax and enjoy your snooze time but add a mantra to it. That could be a POWERFUL practice in and of itself and you may find it will transform your day. . . then little by little you will crave more practice in the morning, and it will be a joyful process. Let your HUNGER for the practice grow. There are no rules, ok?

if you're especially tired, hit snooze and put on a mantra cd. . . how about snatam kaur's ra ma da sa sa say so hung track. . . and lie in bed and put your hands on your navel and heart chakras and go back to sleep. Be creative and don't create a box for yourself of what your practice should look like. Remember, it's YOURS, it's FOR you, it's not against you.

You could even set your alarm for an hour early and put on a morning sadhana cd, then completely go back to sleep as you listen to the music, and wake up again to the final guru ram das chant. . . isn't that something you could look forward to every night?

On a more practical note - be mindful what you eat at night. . . eating heavy foods late at night can make it difficult to wake up, as the liver is overburdened. . .

Our biggest problem is that we want to do too much. Have you heard some meditation instructors telling their students, "you have to force yourself to meditate"?  Once the mind is engaged, it becomes our biggest obstacle. But it is good. The mind is not an enemy. It is the vehicle for greater teachings. After all, it was given to us by God so that we could find our way home. Remember, we don't control our mind, we give it direction.

Don't fight it. If you can not get up, and it looks you have been trying hard enough, then do your yoga sets some other time during the day. Evening perhaps? Early afternoon? The important thing, for now, is that your self gets into the energy flow of Kundalini Yoga. I know plenty of people that wake up early, even go to group Sadhana, but then spend the whole two and half hours asleep.  You can drive the car or you can be driven.  But it is nice for you to drive, get to your destination, and know how you got there. You might even find that, when not forced, you can even add to your Kriya a full eleven or perhaps 31-minute meditation. Then the transformation will begin. Your Self will start drifting towards the Amrit Vela hours. Why? Because it is its natural State. It is the way of the soul. Before you know it, and it may take weeks or even months, you will be getting up at 3 or 4am, taking that nice cold shower, and hitting the sheep skin/mat as easy
as breathing. Once your glandular system is beginning to balance, through your daily yoga experiences, specially the pituitary/adrenal axis, your system will drive you towards the morning.

Remember, allow yourself to flow through the Shabd Guru into the Naad so that you can experience Nam.

its ridiculous at this point. i set my alarm and dismiss it every morning

and have for the past two or three months maybe. its become a way for me to

beat myself up even. i start every day disappointed in myself for hitting

snooze but when the alarm goes off, i'm so tired and comfortable being

still. cant seem to resist.

any advice is welcome. tough love even. i don't know.

Perhaps you could try just getting up - not doing yoga, but just getting out of bed. And after you do that a couple of times, then get up and do yoga.
I understand about beating yourself up and feeling disappointed.
I'm thinking - try to find a way to make it easy on yourself to get up.
I finally have a consistent practice. When I started I did an easy set, cuz I knew if I had a difficult set, I would use it as an excuse to not do anything.
So somehow can you make getting up easier - maybe reward yourself with a good breakfast or a nice read or a walk, or whatever gives you pleasure.

[Kundalini Yoga] I could use some words of encouragement

I started daily yoga stretch set 3 months ago. I have only missed about 4 days of morning practice in that time. Then about 1 month ago I started the adrenal/kidney set.

At first the adrenal set made me feel so great! Strong and positive.
Lately I feel two things I don't like -
I'm hungry all the time - a gnawing feeling which normally indicates to me that my adrenal system is not operating well.
I'm also obsessing about some conditions at work, which is about nothing real - it is my mind searching for ways to sabotage myself
{old pattern}.

I'm thinking that perhaps the adrenal set is balancing my body so I may experience feelings I don't like.
I have no intention of stopping the set -
but would like to know if anyone has done this set and what you experienced-
and also if anyone has found themselves sabotaging themselves even tho they have a good practice.

Namaste Erin,

I had a similar situation not too long ago.
First of all, you have no reason to beat yourself up. All it takes is a
little experimenting and adjustments.

First of all, if you are sleeping 6 1/2 and not getting enough sleep there
might be a problem with your mattress. I used to wake up after getting 8
hours of sleep, with my mind rested but my body like jello. It would take my
body around an hour to "wake up". I experimented with a lot of things,
including what i eat before I go to sleep and if I got enough oxygen in the
room where I sleep. In the end I bought a wooden board and threw my mattress
out the door. Now I sleep 6 hours and wake up ready to go as soon I get. My
conclusion from this was that you need to sleep on a hard surface so that
the spine is straight and not crocked. In my experimenting the body can
adjust so that the spine is straight best on a hard surface. If you do
decide to do this you will take a week or two to get used to the hard
surface, but just see how you feel when you wake up the next morning.
Second of all, do you eat anything before going to sleep?. If you do,
stop. Do not eat anything 4 - 5 hours, (or better 6), before going to sleep.
If you are hungry and cant go to sleep, drink milk or water. If you eat
before sleep, you not letting your body rest, and polluting your stomach
because the food will not be digested correctly.
When do you wake up do some energizing mudras (example: shiva linga mudra)
for 5 minutes or so.
When you wake up wash your face with cold water.
Put the alarm clock across the room and not next to your bed.
What time do you go to sleep? The hours slept before midnight count twice
then after midnight.
Also make sure there is enough oxygen in the room you sleep in.

I hope you can find some of these tips useful. Experiment. Whatever you do,
don't beat yourself up, you are a Supreme Spirit having a human experience.
