The practice of Kundalini yoga gives us a perfect opportunity to develop
a loving relationship with our body.While we do the exercises, we pay
attention to the effect that each exercise is having on our body. Our
goal is to /activate, align and achieve the optimal functioning and
integration of/ all parts of our body. We do not achieve these goals by
punishing, jerking around or beating up our body.

Our touchstones are

/stretch NOT strain/

/strengthen NOT hurt/

/activate NOT annoy/

Our body knows the difference and will tell us if we pay attention. Many
Kundalini yoga exercises are vigorous. Their vigor causes our glandular
system to secrete. Our glands must secrete to change our body chemistry
so that our Kundalini can awaken and our consciousness can transform.

Because of the rigor of some Kundalini yoga exercises, the question
often arises -- how far do I push myself and when do stop? One rule of
thumb is "Is this going to hurt when I am done?" If our mind is telling
us to stop, keep going. If our body cannot tolerate the impact, stop.
There is a fine, but clear, line between keeping up during a challenging
exercise and injuring yourself. The more we pay attention to our bodies,
the easier it is to identify that line. Our body responds to kindness
and our body loves to operate at its optimal level. So be kind and
increase your capacity gradually.

Between exercises, we pay attention to the effects by feeling the energy
and the sensations in our body. We often overlook this aspect of our
training. Yet it is during the relaxation, when we are consciously
"doing nothing" that we can actually listen to our body. This is the
optimal time to stay present and let our bodies communicate with us.
They have much to share if we would (1) stop long enough to pay
attention, (2) be patient enough to learn their language and (3) be
humble enough to give value to the messages.

Subject: [Kundalini Yoga] Having a little trouble






HI all, I don't know if anyone can shed some light on this for me, but I went to yoga class at a studio here in L.A. The class was good, challenging, and I made it through fine. But later I had great trouble sleeping when I went to bed. Part of the problem was some achiness from class, but I also think there was overstimulation. Some of the teachers here are very intent on all of us getting ready for the Aquarian age and they REALLY push in class. Kind of drill sargeant like. I usually avoid those teachers as I inevitably end up injured. Unfortunately I tend to push myself anyway, so sometimes the continual pressure to keep going no matter what can push me too far. So here's my question: Is it a common goal of KY to really push the limits? If you can't sleep the night after class does that tell you anything about your process that you need to pay attention to? Any insight much appreciated.

We all have physical limitations, no matter what age we are. When a teacher
pushes too much we tend to over extend ourselves. Pay attention to your own body
and put as much effort into the kriya as is right for you. It does not matter
what your fellow students are doing or what you think your teacher is expecting
of you. We can come into this Aquarian Age with grace and gentleness. blessings

[Kundalini Yoga] Having a little trouble

Of course you can start out with less times and work up to the longer
times. This is the normal way we practice KY. How about taking lessons

Tell her she has come to the right place. Everything that she feels are
issues that are addressed in the regular practice of Kundalini yoga.
Very important, include grounding and the descent of the energy. I have

The mind is a powerfull thing! The master of illusions...the dust in the mirror.  We have not started our voyage, and we think we are there, no wings, and feel they are broken, no heart, and think we are liberated...can´t follow our soul, and feel it needs repair...
 
My recommendation to your student is to meditate on why the fish gets thristy while surrounded with so much water. And after two or three years, have her ask you again.

[Kundalini Yoga] question regarding energy (kundalini) raised from a new yoga student

Sat Nam,

I have a brand new student who indicated that she had a spontaneous 'kundalini raising' experience before meeting me or attending a yoga class. She has attended one class with me, a few months ago. She tells me now that as an energy practitioner her energy feels stuck and there is a lot of it and that she thinks it needs to be raised and elevated through her crown chakra and out and wants assistance in doing so.

Any suggestions or thoughts I can give her?

Pay attention to:
May sure you are not over-exercising.
The place where you are exercising could be too dry/hot.
You are VATA contitution and are eating spicy and or dry foods.

For starters make sure your body is properly hydrated.
and if you continue to bleed ask your doctor to cauterize
the place you are bleeding from.

Hmmmm I'm not the go to person when it comes to knowing about cleansing, but I can say that when I've cleansed in the past, there always seemed to be something I didn't expect. The body releases toxins in so many ways. I would look it up on Google too, there is a lot of useful advice about cleansing.

Sat Nam!

I am very new myself to Kundalini but after 3 weeks I attended my first
White Tantic Yoga.

I also have a few books, and use youtube, but I am able to take classes a
few times a week. Some classes are 10 dollar donations and other classes can
go from 20 to 30 per class.

You may start out slow. You don't want to go to fast with this practice as I
was told, however I am going to stop here and let the others take it from
here as I also can benefit from the answers. There is a ton of information
at www.yogatech.com. Please check out that site!

You have chosen a wonderful type of yoga- Kundalini. I have been practicing
Kundalini yoga for almost 10 years, and I love it more than any other yoga.
You can make up your own practice time according to your schedule. Borrow a
DVD if you can't afford classes, pick different kriyas out of your book
which calls to you- either way you will be successful and everything that

I'm very new to kundalini yoga. a friend teaches it in my town but I just can't seem to gather the funds to take her class yet. I did find a great book on it and it has wonderful advice and things to do and explains simple mantras, kriyas and habits i should get into to purify.
My first question is do I really need to start off with 30 min. matras or can i trim it for the first few times? So far I've just been checking in and doing mantras, cause I pefer to have a teacher show me how to do the poses properly. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm excited, this yoga spoke to me as opposed to other forms that I physically can't do due to slow healing cartilage in my knees.Thanks!

Janne, let me help you a bit. If the sound clips haven't helped may the
longer ones at http://www.gongsongs.com/Gong_-_Samples.htm can be of
use. I have others that are much longer, but contact me off-list for
those. If after hearing them all, nothing impresses you than that may be
good. It my be saying quite simply that you want a Symphonic Gong from
Paiste. As Yogis that's all we really want to use, anyway. There is no
focused pitch or fundamental note with a Symphonic. The mind is always
trying to identify things, and with sounds it is trying to organize that
into a music. The Symphonic gongs defies that and blows the mind away.
That's what we want!
Get a 30" to 32" Symphonic gong, a Partial Circle Floor Stand (C shaped)
and an M3 mallet. I may be able to arrange this for you direct from
Paiste and at a very competitive price.
The quality of the sound of the gong will tell you something of the
vibration at the time the metal was produced and cooled, both on the
physical realm and beyond :o). Regardless, we have methods of *clearing*
a gong and playing it into it's most harmonic resonance. All things
clear at that point.

I've also bought my gongs from Andrew and Gongs unlimited. Found it easier
and cheaper to buy in the USA and ship to Malaysia, rather than buy from the
official Paiste dealer here.

Whichever gong you end up buying, you will love it!

It shows you how to make to simple and ultra sturdy gong stand from pipe. I
used galvanized iron pipe instead, which is what I could get here, and found
someone with the heavy duty machinery to drill 2 holes in the pipe for me
for the hooks.

Find these to be really good stands, after having bought a light stand that
really wasn't very good.

If you watch any videos of Harijiwan from www.harijiwan.com, you'll see that
most if not all of his stands are these pipe stands.

Just made more sense for me here in Malaysia to make my own rather than get
something shipped from the US or Europe.

With these pipe stands your gong can really get it's resound sway on!

I've had the opportunity of trying a number of variations of Paiste gongs at a gong workshop I attended some time ago. Different sizes from about 22" to 34" and different types of gongs, symphonic and planetary gongs... also floor stands versus stand up stands. This helped me tremendously when it came to actually making the purchase. You may resonate with something different than me. But I chose a standard 32" symphonic gong with a C-style floor stand. To me, the main difference is the size of the gong, not so much whether it's a planetary, etc, etc. The larger the gong, the more deep, powerful and wonderful the sound. One thing to consider though is whether you will be carrying the gong to different places. A 32" is still mobile, a little heavy though... and I highly recommend a gong case.

Since I'm in the U.S., I ordered my gong from Gongs Unlimited.com. The owner, Andrew, was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. You can learn a lot just by going to the website... www.gongsunlimited.com

Andrew might be able to connect you with a distributor in Europe. Perhaps you can google Paiste Gong Distributors and find a distributor in Sweden.

Living in Sweden/Europe a eauropean distributor will probably be most worthwhile due to shipping costs.

Wanted to share an 11 repetition version of the Tribhangee Chhand, Jai
Tegang Jappa we have been sharing as of late, that I recently recorded
in 3/4 rhythm, which I believe is the original rhythm Guru Gobind Singh
intended in Bachitar Naatak. Tribhangee means three
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribhanga.

If you do this jappa and pull navel point in as you resonate the "ung"
sound at the end of each word in the ¾ time, you can have quite a unique
and powerful experience.

Am also sharing Bhai Avtar Singh's wonderful kirtan version of Jai
Tegang as well, in the Tribhangee rhythm. I emulated his version in the
jappa I recorded. It is my understanding that he was one of the
preeminent Sikh ragis of all time and his adherence to and understanding
of the ancient traditions is well respected.


In addition

Underlined are the exact points on the jappa where the navel is pulled
as per my own personal interpretation and it is not a meditation taught
by the Siri Singh Sahib. I am sharing with you my understanding and
enjoyment of the Tribhangee chant.

I practised Kundalini yoga many years ago when I was in my 20's .
At 53 I think I need it more than ever !
I work as a custodian at a high school and am on my feet for most of my shift . I am starting to feel it .
I love the feeling as the chakras open , that feeling of squeezing the life force up into your mind .

Sat Nam Neil, It took me about 2 years of contemplation to decide whether or not
to do a Kundalini teacher training or Anusara teacher training. In the end after
reading what Yogi Bhajan said in the Aquarian Teacher training hard cover
manual. I decided to go with Kundalini.


From the Manual:

 " I could have taught hatha Like everyone else. I am good at Hatha. In India
when the hatha yogis got sick I would heal them.I am a specialist in hatha yoga,
where they use the postures, certain mudras, kriyas and nutrition to treat
people.I chose not to teach Just hatha Yoga. I started teaching Kundalini yogi
and everyone told me, 'It will be hard and it will not be popular. No one really
wants awareness in the west. You should start with Hatha." I had to decide. "Am
I doing this  for myself and pick the easy route or am I going to deliver the
knowledge undiluted and as a legacy for these people? I felt that people in the
west needed a positive realization and awareness in a short time. That system
had to be strong enough and practical enough that any householder can practice
it.

All the traditional Hatha Yoga systems were aimed at students who could limit or
withdraw from normal life. There is no better system known to me than Kundalini
yoga. Though Raj Yoga is great, it is very mental and a student has to be very
well prepared for it.


The beauty of Kundalini yoga is that if you can just physically sit there, fix
the automatic rhythm of your pranayam and the creative naad your mind becomes
focused and balanced. In one kriya you can immediately achieve a complete
physical, mental and spiritual balance. It works effectively and quickly because
of this completeness, balance and energy. Since any method from prayer to dance
that helps you to achieve universal consciousness must eventually raise your
kundalini to accomplish it, why not start with kundalini yoga direct? What is
the purpose of Hatha yoga? The purpose is to raise the awareness. It is a
technology which brings the apana and the prana, the sun and the moon powers
together to raise the consciousness through the central equilibrium line. In
other words it's stated aim is to raise the kundalini. The problem is that it
takes about 22 years to raise it that way, even with a perfect practice. That is
the long method.The difference with that and Kundalini yoga is only a matter of
time and rate of progress. The purpose of the two approaches is the same only
Kundalini is the direct quick and perfect practice for the pace of the modern
household.

Teaching hatha and Kundalini yoga are different. First of all, It is difficult
to teach Kundalini yoga. A teacher who does not have a beam of energy within him
or herself can not teach it. That is the first fundamental. As a teacher of
Kundalini yoga, you should be established at a certain steady level of
consciousness to pull the people up to that level. If you do not have that link
of consciousness, the Golden Chain and that spark of awareness, then you can
only instruct in darkness. That is the problem. You could come, and I could give
you a bunch of powerful elegant exercises. You would feel great however, when I
then talk about life and humanity, and the total sum of existence and
consciousness, you have to feel Magnetism come out of me. My reality and
confirmed consciousness must be present to act as a guide and compass. If I
can't give you that, there is nothing to pull you to a new level. Kundalini yoga
is the master science of experience and awareness. It is a transmission of
consciousness from person to person. It is a Raj Yoga that wakens you inside.
That is the difference between Hatha and Kundalini.

 O.K some where I read that if you do Kundalini yoga you will be fit to do any
other form of yoga. I know this is true because it has worked that way for me. I
gave up my hatha practice for more than a year and after doing Kriya daily for a
year my hatha practice was so much more. I also feel that Kundalini has allows
me to do any sport better with more stamina and better lung capacity. My
personal trainer told me he had never met anyone with a core as strong as mine.
After weeks of training and trying to think a ways to challenge my core he
finally said to me " you are a tough one to break." I hadn't been to the gym in
3 years. I began working out with him 2 times a week last December. I hope this

I am thinking of moving my Hatha practice to Kundalini, but I don't have
enough information - a Maya Fiennes DVD and a book. I can't seem to do both.

I suspect that, unlike Hatha, Kundalini would be best done in a class, or
with someone knowledgeable.

Where did you get your information? Did you go to a class? There don't seem
to any in my neck of Scotland.
