I just joined the group today and I thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Matt and I've recently started doing kundalini yoga and meditation. I've been going through the meditation workbook program in "A chakra and kundalini workbook" by Jonn Mumford. As for the yoga, I've been working my way through Nirvair Singh Khalsa's dvd lessons. I really enjoy them and try to do a lesson every couple days.

[Kundalini Yoga] Re: Eczma

I have eczema and have been working with a natural doctor to treat it. My doc uses applied kinesiology to determine the cause. In my case, its casein which is in ALL dairy products. I've been trying to eliminate it from my diet, which is quite hard. From what I've learned, eczema is an allergic reaction to something your eating usually. I would recommended finding an alternative doctor who uses Applied Kinesiology. It is an amazing technique that allows the doctor to communicate with your body using muscle testing. Best of Luck!

I believe my RSI was not caused by lack of strength but excess muscle tension putting forces on my tendons and muscles so they mal-functioned under stress sooner than they could have.

Modern people suffer from tension in two ways. One is static tension caused by repeated tensing ups that don't release. The other is that when we start an action or get excited during action (such as trying harder or getting annoyed while we type) we tend to tense up unnecessarily.

Yoga works to help us notice these problems and teaches us the tools to rectify them consciously. It also helps our system fix them by itself.

I can't say the suggested exercise is bad as I never tried it myself. But I was always wary of RSI advice that suggested more strength was the answer.

More appropriate tension and muscle 'recruitment' / tone / tonus is a more subtle concept but did wonders for me. I stopped by RSI before it became serious but have gone from struggling to spend 3 hours a day at a keyboard to being fine doing 8 to 10 hours sometimes more.

I don't believe excess tension is a local problem either - the holistic path of daily yoga fixed my RSI and did many other wonderful things too.

[Kundalini Yoga] Looking for a CD of progressive relaxation

Hi
I had a tape of Guru Tereth Kaur Khalsa doing Kundalini Yoga until it finally wore out. At the end she does a progressive relaxation which I love - "imagine a golden healing light entering your body thru your toes..."
and goes thru the whole body.
Unfortunately the tape broke before I was able to record that.
I would love to find something similar that I could play during my relaxation time.

Sat Nam, for carpal tunnel, it is more important to stretch right there on the inside of the wrist, base of the palms where the carpal tunnel is. Sometimes the pain is caused by repetitive motion 'cause the muscles right there to tighten and "bulk up" pressing on the nerves that run down the carpal tunnel. Stretching in the ways previously posted should help most, but it is also good to have strong wrists, shoulders (almost clapping), and arms. Let us know when and what helps so we can share with others. Thanks.

The easiest and most effective way to strengthen the area is to excersise the hands.  If you hold your arms in front of you palms facing up and arms straight.  Clasp the hands into a fist and then release.  Do this rapidly as fast as you can and for as long as you can.  It is almost like clapping without the hands touching each other.  Do everyday and keep a diary of results.

I am not a doctor but I did get myself better from RSI.

Muscular Skeletal Disorders are problems where excess tension and other things cause a whole range of problems including various RSI's, Back Ache and I think I recall De Quervain's. There is a common underlying problem with all these things. Fixing that is supposed to work better than addressing the specific symptoms which is what most doctors try to do. Yoga did this very well for me.

I have a been dx: De Quervain Tenosynovitis of the left wrist since 2/2012. I have noticed a bony knot on inner aspect of wrist and my thumb area is very tender. Xrays show no fx. Is there any tx or exercise to strentghen this area ?

[Kundalini Yoga] Re: Question for Kundalini yogis who do Structural Integration or Heller work

I cant advise about structural integration but I have tried quite a few 'modalities' and there are a lot of people giving advice coming from different spiritual/religious beliefs and different 'scientific' beliefs that aren't necessarily very scientific. Also many people give advice that is affected by commercial prejudice ie. Don't go there for help come to me.

There is also advice that is honest but mis-guided and advice that is totally correct.

And there is often no way to tell the difference except your own intuition. !

From my experience the Kundalini yoga kriyas even if taken out of any religious or spiritual context come from people who had a very deep understanding of human functioning, way beyond what western somatic practitioners know about. If you use them with common sense and follow instructions correctly you are very unlikely to harm yourself unless you aggravate an existing medical condition.

I have never heard of exercise risking shortening muscle but am only a layman. The movement in K yoga encourages the release of long held tension and freeing up of the fascia - that is healthy lengthening. I think this is also what Hellerwork etc works for to - but in K yoga they have figured out how you can do it for yourself.

Yoga / meditation that encourages you to discover and develop your internal awareness leads you to become your own expert on yourself.

These other things can help though - A buddhist group I really respect in England uses them to help. I can't really afford that sort of stuff though.

You're missing a huge, huge point in this discussion. In Kundalini
Yoga, when we "Tune In" with the Adi Mantra.....deeply, the fruits and gems of this magnificent vessel called the human body begin to open. The tightnesses and tensions have a root in our mind, our subconscious. We DO the posture, kriya or action and then we BE at rest and integrate.

Hi, I'm not Structural Integration practitioner but from a physiotherapist point of view, "shortening" of the flexor group through repetitive flexor dominant exercises is possible but unlikely unless these were the only type of exercises done with no regard to extension or rotation. If anything in treating people with shortened hip flexors, the likely cause has been those having a job that involves predominantly sitting, or pts with weakness and debility who are in prolonged sitting as unable to stand, or athletes esp. sprinters who have hip flexor tightness d/t heavy loads lifted in training and nature of their sport that requires to produce huge explosive power in their flexors, of course there is always those that have a natural postural bias to flexor tightness. Just my input and not complete, but my advice would be start your kriya. It really is about balance in all planes of movement. James

Hi

I recently had a series of structural integration done. My practitioner advised me that doing lots of exercises like leg lifts is not good for the body structure, because it shortens the muscles in the abdomen/upper thigh (psoas for sure, and others too). I was wondering if there is anyone trained in structural integration, heller work, or a similar deep body work that works on the connective tissue, who also does kundalini yoga and could comment from personal experience - I would like to start nabhi kriya again, but now I am wondering if it would counteract the work I had done. Thank you.
